Troops from Thailand and Cambodia have clashed at a disputed portion of their border early on Thursday, with both sides accusing each other of firing the first shot. The two countries' foreign ministries issued a statement condemning the situation "in the strongest terms," while calling on each other to cease the hostile acts.
Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation issued a statement condemning Thailand's aggression. Since the early morning of Thursday, Thai armed forces launched "unprovoked, premeditated and deliberate attacks" on Cambodian positions along the border areas, including Tamone Thom Temple, Ta Krabey Temple and Mom Bei, in the provinces of Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey, it said.
"This act of aggression constitutes a blatant and serious violation of international law, including the fundamental principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the ASEAN Charter, prohibiting the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and political independence of any State," the statement said.
The Royal Government of Cambodia condemns "in the strongest possible terms" this reckless and hostile act by Thailand, per the statement, noting such unprovoked military aggression not only endangers peace and stability along our shared border, but also demonstrates utter disregard for regional norms and international legal obligations.
Cambodia calls on Thailand to immediately cease all hostilities, withdraw its forces to its side of the border and refrain from any further provocative actions that could escalate the situation, it said.
Cambodia reaffirms its unwavering commitment to peace, dialogue, and the peaceful resolution of disputes. However, Cambodia also reserves its inherent right to self-defense and will take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the safety of its people, said the statement.
Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet also said on Thursday in a Facebook post that he had sent to a letter to Acting Chairman of the UN Security Council Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, "requesting the Security Council to urgently intervene to end the Thai army's aggression on Cambodia's sovereign."
The Thai government also condemned on Thursday "in the strongest terms the violations of Thailand's sovereignty and international law" and urged Cambodia to cease its repeated act which constitutes a severe violation of international law, according to a statement issued by the Thai foreign ministry.
It called upon Cambodia to take responsibility for the incidents that have occurred, cease attacks against civilian and military targets, and stop all actions that violate Thailand's sovereignty.
The Thai government said it is prepared to "intensify our self-defense measures if Cambodia persists in its armed attack and violations upon Thailand's sovereignty in accordance with international law and principles," according to the statement.
